West Germany reached 100 FIFA World Cup™ goals in just eight campaigns – fewer than any other nation. Brazil clocked the century in their ninth global finals, while it took Argentina 12 editions, France 14, Italy 14, England 16 and Spain 16. No other countries have achieved the feat in the competition.
The West Germans’ 100th goal was among the most important they have ever scored, coming in Munich’s Olympiastadion in the 1974 final. After Paul Breitner’s penalty had wiped out Johan Neeskens netting the fastest goal in the fixture’s history from the spot, Gerd Muller struck home the winner. With it, ‘Der Bomber’ outranked Just Fontaine and became the outright leading World Cup marksman.
West Germany hit the hundred at a remarkable ratio of 2.44 goals per game and 12.5 per World Cup.
