26 Superstars: Christian Pulisic

A modest 27-year-old from the “Sweetest Place on Earth” who accepts the moniker of “Captain America” with a resigned smile, all eyes will be on Hershey, Pennsylvania’s Christian Pulisic to deliver superhero performances and rich memories for USA on home soil at the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Pulisic’s achievements and attributes

No USA player has enjoyed such success at club level as Pulisic. In 2021 he became the first American to play in the UEFA Champions League final, winning the trophy as a member of Chelsea. His professional career started in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and continues today in Italy at AC Milan. Along the way, Pulisic has accumulated five trophies since his Dortmund debut on 30 January 2016.

He parlayed the pain of missing out on Russia 2018 into a healthy trophy haul with the Yanks in the Concacaf Nations League, winning the competition’s first three editions, his signature moment being a pressure-packed penalty conversion against legendary Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in a 3-2 final victory in the inaugural tournament in 2021.

A winger with ankle-breaking stop-and-start speed and dizzying dribbling ability, Pulisic is often the key to unlock an opposing defence.

Pulisic tributes

“He’s known for being Captain America, but he doesn’t like to be called Captain America. He doesn’t see himself like a superhero; he’s keeping a low profile and his feet on the ground, but that’s not the case. You are Captain America. I don’t care what you say. You are. If that’s more pressure on you, I don’t care. It’s his own fault. If you weren’t so good we wouldn’t ask anything from you.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic

“Christian is a great player. We can say he is the most important player for the national team. He has to compete each week at Milan. We are so happy when he provides goals and assists.”
Mauricio Pochettino

“Pulisic is a problem solver, both when his team has possession and when they don’t. The stereotype is that attacking players of his level are a little bit selfish, they don’t work as hard out of possession, that they put themselves first. Not Pulisic. He’s the opposite, he is a team-oriented guy and his work rate is incredible.”
Tiago Leal

“I’m not saying he’s Messi, but I’m saying in the same way we take what Messi does for granted, we’re taking Christian for granted in the prime of his career. You can argue he has been the best player in Serie A consistently over the last three years. And we take that for granted.”
Landon Donovan

Pulisic trivia

Pulisic’s parents, Kelley and Mark, each played college soccer at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

In addition to playing football as a youth, Pulisic was an avid basketball player, often seen playing hoops with friends. Impressively, he can also dunk.

Despite being a native of the state of Pennsylvania, home to perennial NFL powers the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, Pulisic is a self-declared fan of the New York Jets, whose home of New York New Jersey Stadium is the venue for the World Cup 2026 final.

Pulisic was eligible to represent Croatia at international level through his grandfather, but opted to suit up for his homeland.

Pulisic’s signing with Dortmund came by accident. The German giants were in Turkey in 2014 to watch another American prospect, Haji Wright, play with the USA U-17s. Instead, it was Pulisic who caught their attention. They quickly signed the rising star, who was able to move to Germany before the age of 16 thanks to his Croatian passport. Coincidentally, both Wright and Pulisic scored for USA at Qatar 2022.

Pulisic stats

Pulisic’s World Cup history

Despite having just one global showpiece under his belt, Pulisic has already enjoyed a healthy World Cup record. He started all four matches for USA in Qatar and had a hand in all three goals scored by the Stars and Stripes. Pulisic provided the assist on Timothy Weah’s strike in the 1-1 draw against Wales in their tournament opener, before notching the lone goal in a 1-0 triumph over IR Iran that punched USA’s ticket to the knockout round.

The Keystone State native absorbed a heavy knock during his goal against the Iranians, but recovered in time for USA’s Round of 16 showdown against the Netherlands. While Pulisic and Co. exited the tournament following a 3-1 defeat to the Dutch, he did contribute the assist on Haji Wright’s goal.

Pulisic and USA’s World Cup 2026 hopes

The relationship between Pulisic and USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino went through a rough patch in the middle of 2025 during which the Argentinian tactician did not call him for the pre-Concacaf Gold Cup friendlies. However, it appears fences have been mended.

“I think Christian in the last year showed a great quality,” said Pochettino in October on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast. “He’s performing in Europe, also he’s performing with the national team. He’s a very talented player that can help us to win.”

Pulisic is enjoying his finest season in Milan, and assuming his health stays intact, he is poised to begin in peak condition the most important World Cup in USA soccer history. Captain America wouldn’t have it any other way.
