An undeniably top-class operator blending sublime dribbling skills with an outstanding football IQ and an exceptional engine, Florian Wirtz has all the ingredients to set the world alight at the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
A measure of just how highly Julian Nagelsmann rates the midfield maestro is the fact that the coach has built his Germany side around him, affording him the licence to roam and work his magic. On his day, the gifted technician can be unplayable, taking games by the scruff of the neck, making things happen on the ball and giving opponents no time to breathe off it.
Wirtz’s achievements and attributes
The former Cologne academy sensation’s overall record for his country makes for encouraging reading: in 39 appearances, he has amassed ten goals and 11 assists. This follows a highly promising progression through the German ranks, which culminated with glory at the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where the then 18-year-old attacking midfielder was a key contributor.
On the club side, meanwhile, the orchestrator was instrumental to Leverkusen’s run to a first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023-24 under the stewardship of Xabi Alonso, arguably the most influential figure in his career to date. That proved to be a dream campaign for Wirtz and Co, who completed the domestic double by lifting the German Cup (they would later convert this into a treble by prevailing in the Super Cup), with defeat by Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final the only blot on the Werkself’s copybook.
Having racked up 57 goals and 65 assists in just 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz earned a big-money move to Liverpool, commanding the second-largest transfer fee for an outgoing player in Bundesliga history (after Ousmane Dembele).
Wirtz tributes
“What makes Lionel Messi so good? He knows how and when to play simple passes. Football isn’t all about going for the spectacular: you need to be able to pick the best and smartest option. Florian can do that, which is why he’s such a top player.”
Xabi Alonso
“He’s exactly the same in everyday life as he comes across on the pitch. He’s intelligent and, on top of that, he’s a great guy.”
Jeremie Frimpong
“I’d have loved to play with this kid.”
Steven Gerrard
“What sets him apart is his commitment – covering so much ground and working so hard as a left attacking midfielder is exceptional.”
Arne Slot
“We’re good friends and always get a kick out of playing together. We link up well and are always seeking each other out.”
Jamal Musiala
“In possession, I particularly appreciate his creativity and his bravery. That aside, Flo is extremely hard-working and constantly on the move. He’s a far cry from a classic number 10 who only comes alive when he’s on the ball; he puts in a real shift.”
Julian Nagelsmann
“Flo is a once-in-a-century talent. If anyone is worried about him, there’s no need to be, so you can relax. He’s going to come good!”
Jurgen Klopp
Wirtz trivia
Florian’s older sister, Juliane, is also a footballer and has plied her trade for Werder Bremen since the 2023-24 season. The former youth international’s career had previously mirrored her brother’s, as she likewise lined up for Grun-Weiss Brauweiler, Cologne and Leverkusen prior to her switch to the outfit from north-western Germany.
Coincidentally, one of the now Liverpool man’s idols as a kid was Marko Marin, who is probably best known for his stint in Bremen. Wirtz modelled himself on Marin, a twinkle-toed midfielder who excelled at running with the ball and creating chances, and the similarities between the two are easy to spot.
Many of Wirtz’s youth coaches still rave about their first experiences with the prodigy. For instance, Martin Heck, who worked with him at the Cologne academy, has admitted that he has “never encountered another player with the same drive” as Wirtz.
During his time at Cologne, where he spent the best part of a decade, the bundle of energy would sometimes make the 13-kilometre journey from his home in Brauweiler to training by bike, especially during the summer holidays.
Wirtz stats
Wirtz struck Germany’s fastest-ever goal in the UEFA EURO warm-up match against France in March 2024, breaking the deadlock after just eight seconds. Three months later, Wirtz became the youngest player to net for Die Mannschaft at the continental extravaganza when he scored against Scotland.
The fresh-faced flyer etched his name into the Bundesliga history books for the first time when he opened his scoring account against Bayern Munich on 6 June 2020 aged 17 years and 34 days, although Youssoufa Moukoko would subsequently snatch that record (16 years and 28 days).
Wirtz was the first person to score five Bundesliga goals before turning 18 and again as the most youthful player to make 50 appearances in the division, having brought up his half-century at the age of 18 years, seven months and 12 days.
Wirtz’s World Cup history
Wirtz was cruelly denied a World Cup debut at Qatar 2022, having missed due to an ACL injury.
Germany and Wirtz’s 2026 hopes
The four-time world champions’ first target is to avoid an unwanted hat-trick – namely, being eliminated in the group stage for the third straight edition – although that is far from a foregone conclusion, with Côte d’Ivoire, Curaçao and Ecuador sure to be raring to claim their scalp.
Nagelsmann says that he has his eyes firmly on the prize in North America, and several of his players have publicly echoed that sentiment. Wirtz is among them, having sounded an unambiguously ambitious note: “I’m someone who likes to aim very high. Winning the World Cup remains the goal.”
