26 Superstars: Luis Diaz

Colombia head to FIFA World Cup 2026™ with wing wizard Luis Diaz in fine form and determined to improve on their previous best outing on the global stage, when reaching the quarter-finals at Brazil 2014. With a host of his team-mates plying their trade in illustrious leagues abroad, Nestor Lorenzo’s charges will be confident of advancing from Group K, where they will be joined by Portugal, Uzbekistan and the winner of the FIFA Play-Off Tournament final between Jamaica and Congo DR.

Diaz’s achievements and attributes

The 29-year-old has carved out a career that has propelled him to superstar status and been rewarded with a haul of silverware. The boy from Barrancas has won titles with Junior in his home country, Porto in Portugal, Liverpool in England and Bayern Munich in Germany.

Thanks in no small part to his dazzling dribbling skills and tantalising talent that had captured the attention of scouts during his teenage years, Diaz lifted the Copa Colombia, the Colombian Superliga and two top-tier titles with Barranquilla’s Junior before sealing a switch to Porto. He breathed new fire into a Dragoes side that won two Primeira Liga titles, two Taca de Portugal trophies and one domestic Super Cup, scoring 41 goals in 125 appearances during his period with the Portuguese powerhouses.

His standout performances prompted Liverpool to part with a hefty sum to secure his signature in January 2022. At various points during his time at Anfield, he dovetailed delightfully with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Cody Gakpo and the late Diogo Jota. After spending several months sidelined by injury during the 2022/23 season, Diaz was pivotal in propelling Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2024/25, ending four years of Manchester City dominance.

In July 2025, another European giant came calling, as Bayern swooped for the devastating dynamo in yet another big-money move. Diaz did not have to wait long for his first trophy with Die Roten, who clinched the German Super Cup in August. The Colombian has since gone on to cement his reputation as one of the world’s most lethal wingers, having registered 22 goals and 18 assists in 38 matches across all club competitions going into the March 2026 international break.

His show-stopping displays have been anything but confined to club level. He shared the top-scorer honours at the 2021 Copa America, catapulted Colombia to the final of the same competition in 2024 and scored seven goals in the most recent World Cup qualifying campaign, finding the net against Peru, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

Diaz tributes

“He has a chaotic creativity about him. He doesn’t over-think things in the final third; he just goes with his instincts and tries to beat his man. I know what it’s like to try to tackle a player who runs at you; just when you think it’s the perfect moment to step in and win the ball, suddenly they take an extra touch or change direction. And that’s exactly what Lucho does in the final third. You think the attack might be over, and suddenly you find yourself in a situation where he’s bearing down on goal or draws a foul. Lucho is clever, of course, but he loves the chaos, and that’s what makes him so dangerous.”
Vincent Kompany

“He plays with a smile on his face – that’s just who he is. He’s happy to be out there. You can’t let that joy slip away, in football or any other walk of life. Luis can play anywhere in the world. He’s got the raw ability; he’s already proven that. He’s in the national team and he’s proven himself there too. He can decide his future. We all know what football is like, but he could play anywhere in the world.”
Carlos Valderrama

“I get on well with him; he’s very down to earth. I hope he can get his hands on some major honours. I’m over the moon and hope we see more players like Lucho Diaz.”
James Rodriguez

“I really like him. He’s got great movement and gives his absolute all. He’s a goalscorer and a creator. He’s the epitome of the modern footballer. He’s a player that I really like, I must admit.”
Arsene Wenger (speaking in 2022)
