43 days to go: A set-piece goal shower

Forty-three per cent of the goals scored at Russia 2018 emanated from set-pieces – the most ever registered at a World Cup.

Twenty-two of the 79 efforts were penalties – another record for one edition of the tournament – while Russia’s Aleksandr Golovin, Serbia’s Aleksandar Kolarov, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Germany’s Toni Kroos, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez and England’s Kieran Trippier netted free-kicks.

The latter helped the Three Lions, who scored five times from corners, set a new record for the most goals from set-pieces at one World Cup: nine.
