500 days to go: Legends look ahead to Brazil 2027

In 500 days, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027™ will get under way.

Ahead of this significant milestone in the tournament countdown, FIFA asked some legends of the game to share what they expect the finals to bring.

Formiga – Brazil legend

Brazil, of course; I’m cheering for Brazil. I’d actually already given some thought to that question. When you reach a final, you don’t get to pick your opponent – you have to face whoever stands in your way. But naturally, we would like to get some revenge against the USA or Germany. Or Spain might be waiting for us… But it would be nice to make up for what happened in 2007, when we missed out on the title to Germany – it could happen. But based on the previous final, I think either of those would be the ideal match-up: England or Spain.

Cristiane – Brazil legend

I think Brazil are very well prepared – they’re a national team ready to compete. They have been playing important matches, winning them and climbing the FIFA World Ranking. Now it’s a case of fine-tuning our preparations for the World Cup.

A very exciting era is upon us at the Brazil women’s national team. We have managed to climb back up towards the top of the FIFA World Ranking, after being a little further down for quite a while. Reiterating this is important so that the world understands that they can’t just come here, open our fridge and help themselves to whatever they want (laughs). This turnaround has been huge, and now we’ve really got a shot at winning the title on home soil.

Jill Ellis – FIFA’s Chief Football Officer and USA legend

The Women’s World Cup 27 is going to be epic. I mean, there’s no other word. I think that’s part of the tag line. It will be that. It’ll be – again, I think every time we see another iteration of the Women’s World Cup, we are raising the level. It will, unequivocally, be the best. It’s being hosted in a country that’s absolutely nuts about football. They love it. It’s in the streets. It’s in the life here. You’re combining an incredible product with talent, competitiveness, energy and skill with an incredible host. And, so, I think it’s going to be extraordinary. It’s a can’t-miss event.

We’re hiring people here, we’re being present. It’s an important milestone. I think the closer we get, the more the temperature goes up, the energy that rises as we start to showcase this. I think Brazil is honestly excited about having another World Cup come to their country and I think they’re going to support it, get behind it, and it’s going to be spectacular.

Cafu – Brazil legend

I always back Brazil to win. Can you imagine a World Cup final being played here between Brazil and Argentina? In Brazil, on South American soil, with Brazil being crowned world champions… That would be amazing.

Hosting the Women’s World Cup in our country means the world to us. First and foremost, we want to promote the women’s game, encourage girls to play and help them gain worldwide recognition. Furthermore, Brazil have never been crowned Women’s World Cup champions; being crowned FIFA Women’s World Cup champions is of the utmost importance to us, even more so on home soil.
