60 days to go: A goal-laden Lausanne hour

It took merely 60 minutes for all 12 goals to fall in the highest-scoring match in World Cup history between Austria and Switzerland in 1954. One was scored every five minutes on average during that wild hour.

Robert Ballaman broke the deadlock for Switzerland in the 16th minute, which proved the first of three goals in three minutes. Austria led 5-4 at the break, with the nine goals remaining a World Cup record for one half.

Erich Probst ultimately sealed a 7-5 win for the Austrians in the 76th minute. The game is known as ‘The Heat Battle of Lausanne’.
