61 days to go: An unlikely German hero

Andre Schurrle averaged a goal or an assist every 61 minutes at Brazil 2014, playing a vital role in Germany’s triumph.

There was strict competition for attacking places in Joachim Low’s side, with the likes of Julian Draxler, Mario Gotze, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski also available. Schurrle was duly afforded just 28 minutes in the group stage.

The Chelsea winger was then sent on at half-time and broke the deadlock in a 2-1 extra-time win over Algeria in the last 16, and bagged a brace from the bench in the 7-1 destruction of Brazil in the semi-finals.

Sent on in the 32nd minute of the final, when Christoph Kramer was unable to continue, Schurrle masterfully set up Gotze for the only goal in extra time.
