A staggering 62 shots were registered in the 1966 World Cup final – comfortably a record for the fixture. Amazingly, England and West Germany registered 31 apiece in a Wembley Stadium thriller.
The last, taken with nine seconds remaining in the second half of extra time, resulted in Geoff Hurst becoming the first man to hit a hat-trick in a World Cup final. It took 56 years for France’s Kylian Mbappe to become the next. It also sealed the Three Lions’ 4-2 victory and maiden crown.
“Some people are on the pitch,” said commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme immortally as Hurst approached the West German box. “They think it’s all over… it is now!”
Hurst is one of 62 men to score in the World Cup final.
