84 days to go: Rapid Roger raises his record

Roger Milla took just 84 seconds to score for Cameroon after being sent on for the second half against Russia at USA 1994. It made him, at the age of 42 years and 39 days, the oldest all-time marksman in the World Cup, breaking the record he set at Italy 1990.

“I’m still very proud of the record,” said Milla. “I showed the people who doubted me that I still had it in me, despite my age. “I wasn’t 100 per cent, but I still had my technique. It’s a lovely record. Nothing’s impossible but it’ll be very difficult to beat.”

Milla holds the record for the most goals by a substitute in World Cup history: five. After rising from the bench, he netted a goal every 62 minutes on average.
