Left-back Marc Cucurella incredibly netted five goals in his last 22 Premier League appearances for Chelsea FC. It was more than any other Blues player during that period, with Cole Palmer next on four.
Cucurella’s handsome header, following delightful play from Reece James, secured a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the penultimate round, which was central to Chelsea securing UEFA Champions League qualification. The 26-year-old also scored twice in their run to the UEFA Conference League title. It represents a tremendous turnaround for a man who failed to score in his first 59 league games for the Londoners.
The former Barcelona player has also shone for Spain since establishing himself in their team last year. After Palmer had equalised for England, Cucurella set up Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner in the UEFA EURO 2024 final.
Chelsea will open their Group D account against LAFC in Atlanta, before facing CR Flamengo and Espérance in Philadelphia. Chelsea won their first world title by overcoming Palmeiras in extra time in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup™ final in February 2022.
