Brazil turn it up to 11

Throughout the generations, Brazil have consistently produced otherworldly players who have lit up the FIFA World Cup™. The most decorated team in the competition’s history, A Seleção have won the title on five occasions. It comes as no surprise, then, to learn they are the nation who have recorded the greatest number of consecutive victories at the tournament.

Teams winning most successive World Cup games

Brazil’s winning streak was put together during Korea/Japan 2002 and Germany 2006, with legendary figures such as Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo featuring in both editions.

The run began with a dramatic victory over Türkiye in Ulsan. Brazil had fallen behind in their World Cup opener, only for O Fenômeno to level and Rivaldo to strike a late winner from the penalty spot.

From that point onwards, they were unstoppable. After breezing through the group phase with maximum points, Belgium and England were dispatched in their opening two knockout games as they progressed to a semi-final rematch with Türkiye. In another tight affair, Ronaldo’s goal earned Brazil a 1-0 victory and set up a title showdown with Germany in Yokohama.

The relentless Ronaldo – who won the adidas Golden Boot award – was again the difference-maker in the final, with his second-half brace propelling Brazil to a 2-0 success. A Seleção were back on top of the world and had conquered the title in some style, too, winning all seven of their games at the tournament.

Four years later, Brazil headed to Germany to defend their crown. They were again faultless in the group stage, progressing with a 100-per-cent record. Ghana were then swept aside 3-0 in the last 16, stretching their World Cup winning sequence to a record-setting 11.

In the quarter-finals, Brazil faced France, the nation who had last got the better of them in a World Cup fixture. That came in the 1998 final, with Zinedine Zidane scoring twice to inspire Les Bleus to victory. ‘Zizou’ was again in irresistible form when the teams faced off in Germany, producing a virtuoso display and providing the assist for Thierry Henry to volley home the only goal of the game.

Brazil’s incredible run was over, but not before they’d gone where no country had before.
