Lewandowski answers Urban’s call with Poland

Poland’s Urban renewal has taken another significant step forwards with the return of talisman Robert Lewandowski for their upcoming FIFA World Cup 26™ qualifiers.

The veteran Barcelona forward did not always see eye-to-eye with former Poland coach Michal Probierz, who resigned following their dispute. But now he is back in the fold as captain under the newly-appointed Jan Urban.

“I’d like us to start training camp with a clean slate. Robert Lewandowski will be the team captain,” Urban said ahead of Poland’s upcoming UEFA qualifiers against the Netherlands on 4 September and Finland three days later.

His return has come on the back of weeks of negotiations with Urban. “I spoke with Robert by phone and asked if he wanted to come back,” Urban told RMF FM earlier this month. “He said yes. So we’ve taken a step forward.”

Lewandowski’s comeback could not be better timed. Poland currently sit third in Group G in qualifying, with six points from three matches. They sit behind the Netherlands on goal difference and a point behind table-topping Finland.

The 37-year-old has scored 85 goals in 158 appearances for Poland.
