Memphis Depay has become the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer after netting a brace in his team’s FIFA World Cup 26™ qualifying win over Lithuania on Sunday.
The 31-year-old started the game level with Robin van Persie on 50 international goals, but surpassed the legendary striker with a controlled 11th-minute volley. Quinten Timber then put the Dutch 2-0 ahead, before the home side fought back to level.
Depay wasn’t done yet, though, and the Netherlands’ new leading marksman bagged his 52nd Oranje goal just after the hour, planting a superb header beyond goalkeeper Edvinas Gertmonas. The goal proved to be the winner for the Dutch in Kaunas.
Depay’s prolific senior Netherlands career began back in 2013 when he made his debut in a World Cup qualifying clash with Turkey. The Corinthians forward’s 52 goals have come in 104 appearances for his country.
