Matchday 6 preview: Strong starters jostle for position

The top two from Groups E and F go head-to-head on Matchday 6 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025™, as the battle for group supremacy heats up. Eight-goal opening-day winners USA go toe-to-toe with France as Colombia and Norway, both fresh off narrow victories, do battle. Later in the day, South Africa return to action against New Caledonia, while Nigeria and Saudi Arabia face off.

The sides are fresh from very different victories. USA plundered nine against New Caledonia to record the joint-fourth biggest U-20 World Cup win ever, while France needed a late goal to edge a resilient South Africa. Both will be aware this contest could be crucial in deciding who advances top of the pile.

Quick, technically gifted and an accomplished dribbler, Campbell routinely terrorised New Caledonia and netted the last of their nine goals.

Anthony Bermont
The Lens man showed both sides of his game against South Africa, scoring a terrific goal while playing in midfield, before switching to left-back and locking up a lively Amajita attack.

Colombia v Norway

The Group F pacesetters meet, with Colombia and Norway locking horns following a pair of 1-0 victories. Norway coach Bjorn Johansen described Colombia as the “favourites” for this group prior to the tournament, and will be keen for his side to steal a march on their South American counterparts.

Oscar Perea
The winger lived up to his billing as Colombia’s No10 against Saudi Arabia, pulling the strings and capping an eye-catching display by tapping home the winning goal.

Rasmus Holten
Norway’s skipper netted the all-important penalty against Nigeria, and the centre-back impressed with his passing and leadership skills en route to the Player of the Match prize.

South Africa v New Caledonia

While this pair departed El Teniente stadium with nothing to show for their efforts last time out, both had plenty of pride intact. South Africa wrestled back control against France and proved to be more than a match for their European counterparts. New Caledonia, meanwhile, stuck at a daunting test against USA and found their maiden U-20 World Cup goal to give their efforts some reward.

South Africa’s No7 was lively throughout in their defeat to France, and is sure to give the New Caledonia backline plenty to think about in the wide areas.

Nigeria’s attacking play impressed against Norway, while Saudi Arabia earned plenty of praise for their strong rearguard versus Colombia. Something will have to give here if either want to keep pace with the top two.
