A total of 504 young footballers will participate in the competition, with all teams having submitted to FIFA the maximum number of permitted players (21). This is a record, as the tournament is being contested by 24 teams for the first time (up from 16 previously).
Since the tournament has become an annual event, and the previous edition in the Dominican Republic took place only last year, some players have been given a second opportunity to feature at the U-17 Women’s World Cup. Notable returnees include Brazilian starlet Giovanna Waksman, Nigerian attacking midfielder Shakirat Moshood, Mexico’s Berenice Ibarra, Spain’s Celia Gomez, and USA goalkeeper Evan O’Steen, who left the Caribbean with the adidas Golden Glove.
This new tournament format is expected to give even more future stars the chance to shine and offer the unique experience of a World Cup to a greater number of talented young players.
The tournament will kick off on 17 October and conclude on 8 November.
