Italy, Japan and Argentina out to build on wins

The 16 sides which opened the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™ return to action here. South Africa, Argentina and Tunisia are among the teams looking to make it back-to-back wins, while the likes of Bolivia, Belgium and the hosts are on the hunt for their first points.

Group A

13:30 in Rome

Bolivia fell to a disappointing defeat to South Africa in their opener and will be determined to record a first tournament point since 1987. Italy, for their part, held off Qatar to start their campaign with a victory and will be out to sustain their momentum after a fine team display.

The hosts could take solace from their spirit and determination in their narrow defeat to Italy. They will face a confidence-fuelled South Africa who sunk Bolivia despite playing with a man light for just under an hour.

Group B

15:30 in Doha
12:30 in Lisbon
13:30 in Rabat

Portugal were shellshocked by New Caledonia last time out as they fell a goal down inside 11 minutes. They would rally and hit six unanswered goals, but can’t risk giving their near-neighbours – who looked dangerous even in defeat to Japan – a similar head start.

Japan put the ball in the net four times against versus Morocco, and while only two of those counted, their attacking threat was laid bare for all to see. New Caledonia, though, took positives from defeat to Portugal, as they led a match at a FIFA tournament for the very first time. When this pair met at this event in 2017, New Caledonia clinched their nation’s maiden tournament point.

Group C

18:15 in Doha
19:15 in Abu Dhabi
16:15 in Zagreb

These sides were both left frustrated following opening-day draws. United Arab Emirates played more than an hour against ten-player Costa Rica and, while they took the lead, they were quickly pegged back. Croatia, meanwhile, passed up golden chances to net against Senegal in a goalless draw. Both will hope to turn one point into three here.

Both Senegal and Costa Rica relied on dogged defending and immense team spirit to earn a point last time out. Can one of them do enough to claim an all-important victory here?

Group D

16:30 in Doha
10:30 in Buenos Aires
14:30 in Tunis

This pair hit three and six goals respectively in widely contrasting opening-day wins. Argentina used their powers of recovery to battle back against Belgium, while Tunisia showed no mercy as they thumped Fiji. Both are eyeing the knockouts and know victory here will give them a real shot of top spot.

A heavy defeat to Tunisia last time out marked a difficult start to life on the U-17 World Cup stage for Fiji, and things won’t get any easier here as they tackle a Belgium side who took Argentina all the way.
