Final
Korea DPR v Netherlands
20:00 in Rabat
04:00 in Pyongyang (on 9 November)
20:00 in Amsterdam
Korea DPR have been dominant so far at this tournament. They have only conceded twice – in the group stage against Cameroon and in the quarter-final against Japan – while scoring 22 goals, with Yu Jong-hyang and Kim Won-sim scoring 14 between them. The defending world champions are looking to win the title for a record fourth time and aim to become the second team after Spain 2018 and 2022 to defend their title.
The Netherlands are the fairytale story of the tournament. They struggled in the group stage and scraped through to the Round of 16 after a heavy defeat to, of all teams, Korea DPR. With the win against Mexico, the European champions have become the first debutants to make it all the way to the final, where they are now looking to complete a rollercoaster three weeks in Morocco on a high.
Quotes
“As a coach, it’s only natural to desire to win, every coach wants that. So we have done our utmost to become champions.”
Pak Song-jin, Korea DPR coach
“We have to analyse them again, what they did the last two games. We have to make a plan where we have a chance to win, and I think we have a chance to win. We are in a good flow, but we have to look at them, how we can fix their problems and play to our strengths.”
Olivier Amelink, Netherlands coach
Players to Watch
Yu Jong-hyang (Korea DPR)
Jong-hyang has been borderline unplayable at times in Morocco, harmonising perfectly with her forward partner Kim Won-sim and scoring eight goals thus far in Morocco to lead the scoring ranks. Her speed, relentless pressure and eye for goal have already earned her three Player of the Match awards – more than any other player here in Morocco.
Lina Touzani (Netherlands)
Since entering the Netherlands’ starting line-up in the Round of 16 against the United States, Touzani has been a force, providing an offensive spark on the opposite wing of Liv Pennock that the team desperately needed. In the semi-final against Mexico, she scored her first goal of the tournament to send her side to the decider.
Third-place match
Brazil v Mexico
16:30 in Rabat
12:30 in Brasilia
09:30 in Mexico City
Brazil managed to threaten Korea DPR more than most, but ultimately fell to the defending world champions. They are, however, still in the midst of a historic performance at this tournament and aim to finish strong with the bronze medal. Mexico have impressed defensively in Morocco, going without a goal for four straight matches – plus two halves on either end – until conceding against the Netherlands and missing their second final of this competition. Will they be able to hold off Brazil’s offence and crown their run with a medal?
