95 days to go: Mbappe’s breakneck brace

It took France’s Kylian Mbappe merely 95 seconds to score the second-fastest double in World Cup history, dramatically hauling the Qatar 2022 final against Argentina into extra time. Toni Kroos netted twice in 69 seconds for Germany against Brazil in the 2014 semi-finals.

The 23-year-old Mbappe’s first made him the youngest player to reach 10 goals in the competition, and just the fifth to net in multiple deciders after Vava, Pele, Paul Breitner and Zinedine Zidane. His volleyed second travelled into Emiliano Martinez’s net at 123.34 km/h, making it the hardest-struck goal of the tournament.

Mbappe bagged another equaliser in the 118th minute to force a penalty shootout. Though the supersonic No10 converted Les Bleus’ opening spot-kick, they ultimately went down 4-2 to La Albiceleste. Mbappe did at least exit the Arabian Peninsula have become the second man to hit a hat-trick in a World Cup final after Geoff Hurst, the outright leading scorer in the fixture, and with the adidas Golden Ball.
