26 Superstars: Bruno Fernandes

He reads the game at exceptional speed: Bruno Fernandes always seems to be a few seconds ahead of everyone else around him. The tireless, ruthlessly efficient Manchester United captain and Portugal playmaker has become synonymous with technical mastery and inspiring leadership, be it on a crisp night in the north-west of England or on the international stage with the Seleção das Quinas – and his country will certainly be hoping that he can be the difference-maker at the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Bruno Fernandes’ achievements and attributes

Having come through the youth ranks at Boavista, the talismanic linchpin began building his career in Italy with Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria before exploding onto the scene at Sporting CP. He wasted no time in demonstrating his leadership skills on the pitch, captaining the side after Nani’s departure for Orlando City, as well as topping the club’s scoring charts both in the league and across all competitions and clinching Portugal’s Footballer of the Year award in consecutive seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19. All told, he racked up an eye-watering 63 goals and 50 assists in 137 outings for the Lisbon giants – remarkable statistics for a midfielder.

He arrived at Old Trafford in January 2020 and has already carved out a lasting legacy with the Red Devils, having found the net over 100 times and provided a century of assists. He also lifted the 2023-24 FA Cup and the 2022-23 EFL Cup.

Fernandes featured for his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and the 2020 and 2024 editions of the UEFA EURO, and he was also a member of the 2018-19 and 2024-25 UEFA Nations League-winning squads.

The midfield architect boasts extraordinary vision and an instinctive feel for attacking runs. He rarely shies away from playing ambitious and progressive passes between the lines and is adept at finishing from distance. Beyond that, he provides qualities that cannot be reduced to mere data: he leads by example and communicates with authority, frequently instructing his team-mates on where to position themselves and demanding greater intensity from them. It is hardly surprising that so many of his colleagues see him as a natural fit for coaching further down the line.

Bruno Fernandes tributes

“There’s the Manchester United with Bruno and without Bruno. He’s the king of the assist, he sees the game play out in front of him. If you use him as a No6, he’s the heartbeat of the side. If you use him as a No10, his goalscoring ratio shoots right up. He could have played in any of the top Manchester United sides in history.”
Roberto Martinez

“You cannot overstate Bruno’s importance. I love playing alongside him. He’s the face of Manchester United. He’s one of the sharpest players in the final third that I’ve ever played with. He only needs a single touch to put a team-mate through on goal.”
Casemiro

“Bruno Fernandes can make anything happen when he’s on the ball. His influence is outstanding, unbelievable. He’s capable of producing some of the best creativity I’ve ever seen.”
Pep Guardiola

“What he’s done is truly phenomenal. His numbers are ridiculous. He’s better than me. He’s different from me. He scores more goals than me and creates more chances than me. I’d have loved to have played alongside him.”
Paul Scholes

“Bruno’s been fantastic since I’ve been here. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about him.”
Michael Carrick

Bruno Fernandes’ World Cup history

Bruno Fernandes made his FIFA World Cup debut in Russia in 2018. Four years later, at Qatar 2022, he was an almost ever-present figure in Fernando Santos’ starting line-up and proved pivotal during the group stage, including two assists in the 3-2 victory over Ghana.

He also bagged a brace of his own in the 2-0 win over Uruguay, as Portugal progressed to the knockout phase.

Then, in the round of 16, he claimed yet another assist in the 6-1 demolition of Switzerland before Portugal were ultimately eliminated by Morocco in the quarter-finals, as the Atlas Lions became the first African side in history to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Bruno Fernandes and Portugal’s World Cup 2026 hopes

At 31 years of age, Bruno Fernandes is set to go into the global bonanza in North America at the peak of his technical powers and as one of the leading lights of Portugal’s current crop, alongside one particular superstar in the twilight of his career – a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. Should Fernandes continue to play with the same authority he has shown in the English Premier League, he could well prove to be the pulse of Portugal’s fire and flair on the sport’s grandest stage.
