74 days to go: Goals grab Lineker gold

Gary Lineker admirably averaged a goal every 74 minutes at Mexico 1986. The 25-year-old striker failed to score in England’s opening two matches, but hit a 25-minute hat-trick against Poland to send Bobby Robson’s side through.

Lineker then bagged a brace in a 3-0 win over Paraguay in the last 16, before grabbing a late consolation in the 2-1 defeat by Diego Maradona and Argentina in the quarter-finals. The Leicester native’s six goals won him the adidas Golden Boot.

Lineker went on to net four times at Italy 1990 and earn the adidas Bronze Ball behind Tomas Skuhravy and Salvatore Schillaci. Ten goals make him the highest-scoring Englishman in the World Cup, two clear of Harry Kane.
