The Bolivian FIFA World Cup™ dream is within reach. Just one more hurdle stands in the way of La Verde returning to their first global finals since USA 1994. It will be another stout test, this time against an Iraq team that emerged from the grind of AFC qualifying to earn a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Play-Off Tournament.
Following their comeback 2-1 win over Suriname in the play-off semi-finals at Monterrey Stadium, Bolivia players Moises Paniagua, Miguel Terceros and Ramiro Vaca offered up a glimpse as to what they expect from their colossal encounter with the Lions of Mesopotamia.
“We know that it is going to be a tough game,” Paniagua told FIFA. “But I think that we have the tools to prepare ourselves and take on Iraq in the best way.”
Terceros, who scored the winner against Suriname via the penalty spot, echoed his 18-year-old team-mate, acknowledging the difficulty of their opposition, but emphasising Bolivia’s resilience in important matches.
“Iraq are a team on a different level, but so are we,” said Terceros. “We are aiming for big things, so we are working hard and hopefully things turn out well.”
Just the mere thought of knowing that Bolivia are a victory away from an almighty achievement has Vaca eager to take the pitch as soon as possible.
“We’re a step away, that is what we wanted and now, thank God, we are going to play the most important match to be able to achieve our World Cup dream,” said Vaca.
Meanwhile, in speaking with reporters, Villegas remained measured as always, hailing the concentration of his players, while also embracing the special moment that they are experiencing.
“We’re focused on what’s ahead, and what’s ahead is the toughest of all,” said Villegas. “This group has shown that it can fight and take charge. We are 90 minutes from fulfilling our objective.”
