73 days to go: When 90 wasn’t enough

Seventy-three World Cup games have gone to extra time. Thirty-one were settled in an additional 30 minutes, while six required replays and 35 went to penalties (shootouts were introduced at Argentina 1978). Nine of the last 10 matches that have gone to extra time have resulted in spot-kicks.

Extra time was ended by a golden goal on four occasions: by Laurent Blanc for France against Paraguay in 1998, and by Henri Camara for Senegal against Sweden (2002), Ahn Junghwan for Korea Republic against Italy, and Ilhan Mansiz for Türkiye against Senegal in 2002.

Eight of the 21 World Cup finals – including four of the last five – have gone to extra time. Croatia have gone to extra time five times at the last two World Cups and incredibly gone through on every occasion, getting past Denmark, Russia and England in 2018 and Japan and Brazil in 2022.

The record number of extra-time goals scored in a game was five in Italy’s enthralling 4-3 win over West Germany in the Mexico 1970 semi-finals. Five men have registered two goals in extra time: Leonidas in 1938, Sandor Kocsis in 1954, Geoff Hurst in 1966, Gerd Muller in 1970 and Roger Milla in 1990.
