68 days to go: Concacaf’s scoring surge

Concacaf teams have scored 68 goals across six World Cups this century. It is three more than sides from the region netted in the previous 15 editions of the tournament.

Leading the way for Concacaf since the third millennium are Mexico (23 goals), USA (22) and Costa Rica (18), with Canada (2), Panama (2) and Honduras (1) contributing the rest.

Landon Donovan is the top marksman in the period (5 goals), followed by Clint Dempsey (4), Javier Hernandez (4), Ronald Gomez (3), Rafa Marquez (3) and Paulo Wanchope (3).

Among Concacaf’s best goals this century are Jared Borgetti’s implausible header for Mexico against Italy at Korea/Japan 2002, Jermaine Jones’ thunderbolt for USA against Belgium at Brazil 2014, and Luis Chavez’s stunning free-kick for Mexico against Saudi Arabia at Qatar 2022.
