Canada continued their fine form in the women’s FIFA Series 2026™ by defeating Korea Republic for a second successive victory in Cuiaba, Brazil. Later today, hosts Brazil take on African opponents Zambia.
Canada goals: Evelyne Viens (23), Vanessa Gilles (50, 70)
Korea Republic goal: Kim Shinji (29)
Vanessa Gilles scored two second-half headers to guide Canada to a gutsy victory over Korea Republic despite playing the majority of the game with ten players.
After making nine changes to the team that defeated Zambia 4-0, Canada picked up where they left off. Casey Stoney’s team broke the deadlock when Evelyne Viens found the target after a brilliant piece of skill from Cloe Lacesse to set up the striker. The lead did not last long, however.
Canada were reduced to ten players just moments later when Jade Rose was shown a straight red card for a foul on Son Hwayeon just outside the area. The Koreans seized their opportunity with Kim Shinji powering the resulting free-kick into the corner of the net.
Canada retook the lead early in the second half through substitute Gilles, who expertly headed in a Jessie Fleming free-kick. Gilles then sealed the victory, once again with her head, when she guided a Janine Sonis corner into the net.
