53 days to go: The dribble king

Diego Maradona holds the record for the most successful dribbles in one World Cup: 53 at Mexico 1986. He is followed by Jairzinho with 47 at Mexico 1986, Lionel Messi with 46 at Brazil 2014 and Eden Hazard with 40 at Russia 2018.

Fifty-three is also the number at which Maradona holds the record for the most fouls suffered in one edition, drawing them in 1986. ‘El Pibe de Oro’ is, unbelievably, second and third on the list, having won 50 free-kicks at Italy 1990 and 36 at Spain 1982. Fellow Argentinian Ariel Ortega is fourth courtesy of 33 at France 1998.
