Essam El Hadary is the oldest player in World Cup history, having been 45 years and 161 days when he appeared for Egypt against Saudi Arabia at Russia 2018. ‘High Dam’ marked the occasion by saving a Fahad Al-Muwallad penalty.

El Hadary is followed by Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon (43 years and 13 days) and Cameroon striker Roger Milla (42 years and 39 days), who is the competition’s oldest outfield player. The top 10 is completed by Northern Ireland’s Pat Jennings, England’s Peter Shilton, Italy’s Dino Zoff, Tunisia’s Ali Boumnijel (all 40), Scotland’s Jim Leighton, England’s David James and Canada’s Atiba Hutchinson (all 39).
