World Cup wonder goals: Cole’s memorable mistake

42 days to go…

We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.

Joe Cole

Sweden v England
Germany 2006 | Group B
FIFA World Cup Stadium, Cologne

Joe Cole admitted he made a mistake. He was 30 yards out, to the left, when Niclas Alexandersson’s headed clearance bounced towards him.

“I didn’t actually realise how far out I was,” recalled the Three Lions winger. “It was a terrible decision to shoot from there.”

Fortunately for Cole, he unleashed the strike of his life, swerving the ball beyond Andreas Isaksson and into the top corner. It helped England secure a 2-2 draw and go through as section winners.

“It was the best bad decision I ever made!” concluded Cole.
