African teams have registered 37 World Cup wins. Nigeria lead the way with six, with Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco and Senegal on five. Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire and Tunisia follow on three, and South Africa have two.
Forty-four years after the continent debuted in the competition, courtesy of Egypt, Tunisia pulled off their first victory: 3-1 over Mexico at Argentina 1978.
Others memorable successes include Algeria over West Germany in 1982, Morocco over Portugal in 1986, Cameroon over Argentina and Colombia in 1990, Nigeria over Bulgaria in 1994 and Spain in 1998, Senegal over France and Sweden in 2002, Ghana over Czech Republic in 2006, South Africa over France in 2010, Cameroon over Brazil in 2022, and Morocco over Belgium and Portugal in the same tournament.
Africa smashed its record for the most wins in one edition in Qatar, with Morocco (3), Senegal (2), Cameroon (1), Ghana (1) and Tunisia (1) getting eight between them.
