Bruno Conti
Italy v Peru
Spain 1982 | Group 1
Estadio Municipal de Balaidos, Vigo
“Disastrous” was how Paolo Rossi described Italy’s first phase. Enzo Bearzot’s charges didn’t win a game and only scraped through by one on goals scored.
The Azzurri nevertheless had one bright spark in Vigo, and he illuminated it with a goal-of-the-tournament contender. Bruno Conti faked receiving a Giancarlo Antognoni pass, let the ball run through his legs, flicked it forward and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the roof of Ramon Quiroga’s net. It helped Italy draw 1-1 en route to the title.
“Conti was a genius,” said left-back Antonio Cabrini. “It was a fantastic goal. We needed it. The press was on our backs enough as it was. Fortunately we all knew that Conti could always win a game with one piece of magic.”
