Letters That Unite: Sebastian Berhalter

With the FIFA World Cup 2026™ just days away, players from across the globe are preparing for what they hope will be a career-defining tournament.

The global showpiece also provides the opportunity for players to reflect on their careers and celebrate their accomplishments alongside loved ones. FIFA is highlighting those moments with ‘Letters that Unite.’

In the latest video, USA midfielder Sebastian Berhalter receives and reads a letter from his father, Gregg Berhalter. The two are very close, with Sebastian describing Gregg as his best friend. That bond has only been strengthened through a shared love for football.

It was no surprise, therefore, that after reading his father’s letter, a teary-eyed Sebastian told FIFA: “Hopefully I can be half the father he is. He’s taught me everything I know and I just want to go make him proud.”

The former USA national team coach referenced their shared love for football, telling his son: “From the very beginning, your life has been connected to this game. From growing up in Europe to back home in the United States, the ball always seemed to follow you. But what has always stood out to me was not just your talent, it was your genuine love for the game and how dedicated you were to getting better.”

Gregg encouraged his son to enjoy the World Cup experience, taking in the anthem, the pressure and the privilege. “Together we get to share an experience that very few fathers and sons ever will,” wrote the former USA coach. “There’s no way to explain how special that is.”

Sebastian will be looking to make his father proud at the FIFA World Cup. “To hear your dad say he’s proud of you, it means a lot. It means everything,” said Berhalter. “Thank you, man. I love you. I appreciate you. I wouldn’t be here without you.”
