Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lewis Hall, Kobbie Mainoo and Fikayo Tomori have earned England recalls for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, while James Garner has won his first call-up. There was, however, no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Morgan Gibbs-White, Curtis Jones, Alex Scott, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Luke Shaw or Danny Welbeck on Thomas Tuchel’s 35-man list, which will be his last before submitting his selection for the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Reece James missed out through injury, while Kyle Walker recently announced his international retirement. Tuchel explained that the plan is for 35-year-old Jason Steele to be used as a training goalkeeper

Opportunity knocks
Defensive midfielder Garner was rewarded for his fine form for Everton, while Mainoo will also compete for action in the engine room after regaining his Manchester United place under Michel Carrick.
Calvert-Lewin has scored four goals in 11 caps for England, but hasn’t played international football in five years. With Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins overlooked, the feeling is that Calvert-Lewin will now compete with Dominic Solanke to act as Harry Kane’s understudy in North America.
Wembley tests
England will face Uruguay on Friday, 27 March and Japan on Tuesday, 31 March. La Celeste and the Samurai Blue are 17th and 19th respectively on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
At the World Cup, England will play Croatia at Dallas Stadium, Ghana at Boston Stadium and Panama at New York New Jersey Stadium. The Three Lions will battle the Black Stars for the first time at the global finals, while they met Los Canaleros and the Vatreni in 2018. A Harry Kane hat-trick powered England to a 6-1 win over Panama in the first phase, before Croatia came from behind to beat them 2-1 after extra time in the semi-finals.
The 2026 edition will be England’s 17th World Cup participation and eighth in succession. They lifted the trophy on home soil in 1966, and finished fourth at Italy 1990 and Russia 2018.
