FIFA Women’s Champions Cup Round 2

Kick-off times

19:00 (Morocco) | 02:00 on Monday (Wuhan)

The newly-launched FIFA Women’s Champions Cup™ will take another huge step towards its conclusion on Sunday, as Moroccan giants ASFAR take on China PR titans Wuhan Jiangda in a one-off battle.

Al-Zaeem automatically qualified for this stage by winning the CAF Women’s Champions League last month, as they downed Ivorian outfit ASEC Mimosas. Wuhan, for their part, had to come through a first-round battle with Auckland United FC in October, with Jiang Chenjing netting a late winner.

The winners of this clash will head to the semi-finals of the competition to face European champions Arsenal in London in January 2026. Gotham FC of the USA and Brazilian giants Corinthians come head-to-head in the other match as four sides battle for two final tickets.

How the teams qualified for Round 2

ASFAR automatically qualified for Round 2 after clinching a second CAF Champions League triumph in four years on 21 November.

The Moroccans, who were first named continental Queens following a 4-0 hammering of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies F.C. in November 2022, qualified for Africa’s flagship tournament after bagging a 12th Moroccan Women’s Championship D1 championship in 13 seasons, and topping the standings in CAF Women’s Champions League UNAF Qualifiers.

At the finals, they finished first in Group A without conceding, before edging by Congo DR side TP Mazembe on penalties in the semi-finals. Hanane Ait El Haj gave them the lead in the showpiece versus ASEC Mimosas, and while the Ivorians got level, another penalty, this time taken by Zineb Redouani, ensured they ruled the continent once more.

In Wuhan’s case, they gained direct entry to the group stage of the maiden edition of the AFC Women’s Champions League following their Chinese Super League title win in 2023.

They won just one of their three Group A matches but squeaked into the knockout stages. A shootout win over Urawa Red Diamonds and a 2-0 victory against Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC saw them advance to the tournament’s showpiece to face Australia’s Melbourne City. A late penalty by national team icon Wang Shuang took that bout to spot-kicks, where a 5-4 win saw them take home the crown.

Auckland United FC were the opponents in the maiden FIFA Women’s Champions Cup clash, which took place in front of more than 30,000 fans at Wuhan Sports Centre Stadium. The hosts dominated for large spells and eventually broke through when Chenjing headed home with just two minutes on the clock.

Team news

ASFAR have played just once following their CAF Champions League success, but it was certainly a confidence-fuelling affair, Al-Zaeem thrashing league leaders Wydad Casablanca 5-0. They remain eight points behind their near-neighbours, although they do have three matches in hand thanks to their continental exploits. So far in the league, they have only dropped points once in 11 matches, in a home draw against ARAFF, before their Champions League triumph.

Since their victory against Auckland just over two months ago, Wuhan have only returned to Champions League action. A 1-1 draw with FC Nasaf was followed by convincing wins against East Bengal FC and Bam Khatoon FC, and they will now prepare for the quarter-final draw in January 2026.

What they said

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase ourselves to the football world. Not everyone gets to play in the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. It’s a great opportunity for me, for the club and for our African opponents. I hope everyone will give their best. From a personal point of view, I also hope to prove myself because it’s something everyone dreams of. Whether it’s the World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations or this FIFA tournament, everyone dreams of playing in competitions like these. Wuhan have given me the opportunity to do that, and when I found out I was so happy.”
Mavis Owusu, Wuhan Jiangda striker

“Before the CAF Women’s Champions League final, the coach told us that we were playing not only for a title but also for a qualification to the Women’s Champions Cup, the first one. We’ll be representing the whole of Morocco there, that was pretty much the coach’s message throughout the competition. I know Wuhan by name but above all, I know a very good player who is there, with whom I spent a year at Paris Saint-Germain: Wang Shuang. I can’t wait to see her again. It’s going to be a great match.”
Anissa Lahmari, ASFAR midfielder
