FC Bayern München issued a statement of intent as they began their FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ campaign in devastating fashion by scoring an incredible ten goals past Auckland City FC.

The Bundesliga giants completely dominated their amateur opponents from New Zealand at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, racking up a six-goal lead by the half-time break, with Jamal Musiala coming off the bench to score a second-half hat-trick.

It was a victory also made in France, with the trio of Kingsley Coman, Sacha Boey and Michael Olise scoring five of Bayern’s goals. Meanwhile Thomas Muller, who is on a farewell tour with Bayern, scored a fine brace.

Coman had the honour of scoring the first goal in FIFA Club World Cup history when he headed in from close range after Jonathan Tah himself headed a corner by Joshua Kimmich back across the goalmouth. Bayern then turned on the gas, scoring three quick-fire goals in a four-minute spell.

Boey doubled Bayern’s lead with a right-footed strike before Olise made it three after bundling in the ball after an initial effort from Harry Kane was blocked. The fourth came from Coman, who shimmied past two Auckland defenders and struck home with a powerful left-footed strike for his brace.

Muller, who is about to bring down the curtain on a remarkable 25-year period with Bayern, then joined the party by scoring his side’s fifth just before the break with a sublime volley from eight yards. Just as the half-time whistle loomed, Olise struck a beautiful left-footed curling strike from distance.

With victory all-but assured, Bayern made a number of changes in the second half. Musiala made an immediate impact off the bench, scoring twice in a six-minute spell, firstly with an exquisite long-distance effort followed by a penalty kick.

Auckland City got the fans off their feet when David Yoo squandered a rare opportunity but Bayern were on cloud nine when Musiala capitalized on an error from goalkeeper Conor Tracey. Muller made it double digits a minute from time as Bayern sent a warning shot to the rest of the field.

Quotes

“We don’t need praise or anything like that right now, we just did our job. We played very seriously. We did what we had to do, and perhaps the goal difference in this group is not unimportant. That’s why the ten goals are perhaps also important for this group stage.”
Vincent Kompany, Bayern München coach

“It’s good that we started the tournament like this. That’s exactly what we set out to do. In one or two situations, we could have done even more to take it to the next level, but overall, I think we’re happy with how we started the tournament. It was a lot of fun. The way we played, the confidence in almost every situation, was a lot of fun. We need to keep it up.”
Jonathan Tah, Bayern München defender

“The stadium was full, we had fans who were really into the game and reacted to the flow of play, especially celebrating the goals. After my last goal, I had a great moment celebrating with them. They were totally behind us. It was a lot of fun. All in all, a very good start. Sure, we were the favorites, but we lived up to that role. That’s how we want to keep going.”
