Classy Comoros surge second in Group I

Comoros defeated Central African Republic 2-0 in Sunday’s only game in CAF qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 26™. It lifted them to second in Group I.

How qualifying works

The nine group winners will qualify automatically for the FIFA World Cup 26™. The four best runners-up will then compete for one place at the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.

Group I

Comoros goals: Youssouf Mchangama (20), Myziane Maolida (39)

Comoros bounced back from their 3-0 defeat to Mali to surge up to second thanks to a comprehensive victory over Central African Republic, who are now eliminated from World Cup qualification.

It was the home side who began the brightest in Meknes and almost scored in the 15th minute, when Moustapha Djimet headed an inviting right-wing cross on to the post. But Comoros weathered the storm and took the lead soon afterwards through a powerful long-distance effort from captain Youssouf Mchangama, after neat work from Rafiki Said Ahumada.

After assisting Mchangama with a simple lay-off, Myziane Maolida doubled Comoros’s lead when he held off a defender to convert Faiz Selemani’s cross. Central African Republic showed real fighting spirit after the break but were unable to find the target.
