It was not even ten years ago that Curaçao qualified for their first Concacaf Gold Cup when they defeated Jamaica 2-1 to win the 2017 Caribbean Cup. So it was rather fitting that another result against the Reggae Boyz yielded even more history for the Blue Wave, and this one of seismic proportions.
With their 0-0 draw in Kingston on the final match day of Concacaf qualifying, Curaçao captured the top spot in Group B in to earn a spot at FIFA World Cup 2026™, becoming the smallest nation – a population of just over 150,000, and a land area of 171 square miles – to qualify for the global showpiece.
The successor to the Netherlands Antilles in international competition, Curaçao first appeared in FIFA World Cup™ qualifying for Brazil 2014. With many of their players based in the Netherlands but boasting heritage from the southern Caribbean island, Curaçao quickly became a player in the Concacaf region, winning their first World Cup two-legged qualifying tie against Montserrat in 2015.
The aforementioned first Gold Cup qualification and then in 2019 a run to the Gold Cup quarter-finals signaled more success, as did a run to the penultimate round of qualify for Qatar 2022 when the Blue Wave were narrowly eliminated by Panama 2-1 on aggregate.
With 2026 co-hosts Canada, Mexico and USA not in the qualifying mix this time around, the pathway to the global showpiece was wide open and Curaçao made the most of it, with young players like Livano Comenencia and Tahith Chong flourishing in big moments to deliver a World Cup qualification that reverberated around the Caribbean and the entire Concacaf region.
Curaçao coach: Fred Rutten
For years, Curaçao were guided by Remko Bicentini, a man who handed the majority of the current squad their Curaçao debuts and led them to their first Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying wins. But opportunity knocked in January 2024 to bring in the services of a World Cup-experienced tactician with the hiring of Dutchman Dick Advocaat.
A man who helped the Netherlands to the quarter-finals at USA 1994 and shepherded Korea Republic at Germany 2006, the 78-year-old Advocaat had the golden touch in qualifying, as his charges amassed an astounding 28 goals in their ten qualifying matches, the best among all teams in Concacaf, while leaking a paltry three goals during the final round.
However, the veteran tactician stepped down in February 2026 for personal reasons, with Curaçao handing the reins to fellow countryman Fred Rutten in what is his first international role. The 63-year-old has coached FC Twente, PSV, Vitesse and Feyenoord in his homeland, while also taking in spells in Germany, United Arab Emirates, Israel and Belgium.

How Curaçao qualified for World Cup 2026
After nearly reaching the final round of qualifying for Qatar 2022, Curaçao made quick work of opponents to begin qualifying for 2026, as they romped past their second round opponents. The Blue Wave opened with a 4-1 win over Barbados in which Rangelo Janga notched a hat-trick, followed by a 2-0 win at Aruba in the two matches played in June 2024. A year later, the second round concluded in even more devastating fashion, with Gervane Kastaneer scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 triumph over Saint Lucia, followed by a dominant 5-1 victory against Haiti.
Drawn into Group B with heavyweights Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda for the third and final round of qualifying, Curaçao never blinked. A solid 0-0 draw at Trinidad and Tobago started things off in the September window, before overcoming a wobble to defeat Bermuda 3-2 at home.
Curaçao then had the luxury of two home matches in the October window and sent a message to everyone that they were for real in a pulsating 2-0 victory against Jamaica. While they were held to a point in a 1-1 home draw against Trinidad and Tobago, Advocaat’s men came back strong to start the November window in a 7-0 takedown in Bermuda. That set the stage for the dramatic finale in Jamaica, and veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room and the Curaçao defence turned away any and all chances from the Reggae Boyz to secure their historic qualification.
