Since emerging on the football scene, Pyramids FC have established themselves as an ambitious outfit that is out to expand the circle of competition domestically and across Africa.
Step by step, they have transformed from a rising club to genuine contenders, culminating in the 2024-25 CAF Champions League title – a historic achievement that was no fluke, but the result of planning, investment, and a clear vision that has placed them in elite company.
The club’s ambitions stretch beyond Africa’s borders. Pyramids have secured their spot in the FIFA Club World Cup 2029™, becoming only the second Egyptian club to play in the competition after Al Ahly, on top of their highly anticipated appearance in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2025™. These milestones speak to the club’s massive ambitions and demonstrate that a project launched only a few years ago is making its way onto the world stage, powered by a well-run operation both on and off the pitch.
As they prepare to face a fresh challenge against Auckland City in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific-Cup™ playoff match on Sunday, 14 September to kick off the Intercontinental Cup, Pyramids find themselves at a historic juncture in the club’s journey, with major ramifications for its future in global football.
The man behind it all is club CEO Mamdouh Eid, who believes in long-term planning and sees sporting success as achievable only through teamwork, discipline, and faith in one’s ability to compete. In an exclusive interview with FIFA, he discussed Pyramids’ coronation as African champions, the importance of the Auckland City clash, and the team’s ambitions for upcoming tournaments.
Mamdouh Eid: I’m extremely proud of the achievement. We’re overjoyed after the effort and tireless work we put in to get here. This is the product of our hard work and dedication, and we thank God that this journey has culminated in the success we’ve rightly earned. We always work towards a clear goal, with a firm and unwavering belief that we’ll achieve our goal someday. It’s not a matter of expectation alone – it comes down to belief in God, in our abilities, and that the efforts we put in will eventually pay off.
Our achievement doesn’t diminish the stature of Pyramids’ rivals in any way, but Egyptian football certainly deserves to have more than two or three teams in contention. Pyramids’ success is a crowning achievement for all of Egyptian football. Having fierce competition has only made us stronger. The stronger and more competitive Egyptian clubs become, the more it benefits the development of Egyptian football and the national teams, as well as Pyramids – we will continue to evolve and gain strength alongside our rivals.
It’s an enormous opportunity for Pyramids – really, a historic chance to feature in a tournament of this calibre and organisation. We want to make the most of it, go as far as we can, and feel proud of what we achieve, so that this tournament sets us on a path to be ready for an even bigger event in the Club World Cup 2029, where we aim to make history. Pyramids’ preparations began some time ago with a special training camp in Türkiye, and the team is currently in good shape after five league matches.
This will be the first official match Pyramids have ever played against a club from outside Africa. Without a doubt, it’s a hugely significant step in the evolution and growth of the club. This encounter presents an opportunity to learn and gain experience. But at the same time we’re also shouldering a big responsibility, as representatives of Egypt and Africa, to make the best possible showing in a major tournament featuring all the continental champions.
I personally have great faith in the Pyramids players and all our personnel, in their ability to do great things and keep delivering successes and titles. We all share great confidence and a determination to make our mark and go as far as possible in the tournament. As a team, we’re always focused on our objective of winning every tournament we participate in, but we also approach each tournament with humility. We take things step by step. Once each stage has been completed and those objectives have been met, we move on to the next one, until ultimately we’ve achieved all our goals.
We have a highly professional coaching staff. They’re honest and dedicated and love what they do, and the manager’s decisions are always rooted in sound judgement. He’s also shown the ability to bring real cohesion to the squad. The whole structure is working brilliantly, and we’re delighted to have him on our team. The management, the technical staff, the players, and all the elements of the system are in complete alignment, and that’s what made it possible to capture a prize as big as the CAF Champions League title.
My message to the players and the whole Pyramids family is that this wonderful occasion, our match against Auckland City, is the result of the tremendous efforts everyone has put forth over the course of years. Every person in the club has earned their place as part of this moment. They should enjoy the match, give it everything they’ve got, and take pride in their performance, because it will be remembered for years to come.
