France v Netherlands
16:30 in Rabat
16:30 in Paris
16:30 in Amsterdam
Based on the performances during the group stage, many may have expected Spain against the United States here – but instead, those two teams ultimately fell to France and the Netherlands, respectively, on penalties. The upcoming match between two nations that met in the semi-finals of the last UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship still promises plenty. The young OranjeLeeuwinnen had the last word on that occasion with 4-3 shootout win.
Quotes
“That match against the Netherlands was a hard-fought, intense game that we could have lost or won. I think this one will be similar. The Netherlands have a very good team, with some excellent individual players in attack.”
Mickael Ferreira, France coach
Players to Watch
Maissa Fathallah (France)
France were able to thwart Spain’s plans thank in large part to Fathallah. After a slow start to the tournament, the Lyon player has now found her form and is capable of single-handedly changing the way her team plays. Valuable both defensively and offensively, she too has not forgotten that European semi-final in which she came on as a substitute but was unable to secure victory for her team.
Liv Pennock (Netherlands)
The only goalscorer in that semi-final against Les Bleuettes, Pennock quickly found her feet on the world stage, scoring her country’s first-ever goal in the tournament in the opening minutes against Cameroon before catching the US off guard in the opening minutes of their Round of 16 clash. Technical, fast and powerful, the young Dutch player stands out on the right wing, where she is capable of creating danger at any moment.
Mexico v Italy
20:00 in Rabat
13:00 in Mexico City
20:00 in Rome
This pair have had quite different routes to the quarter-final. The Mexicans got off to a poor start with a defeat to Korea DPR, while their opponents have had little difficulty from their opening 3-0 victory over Costa Rica, to their resounding 4-0 last-16 success against Nigeria. Although they have scored 14 goals since entering the competition, Giulia Galli and her team-mates will have to find a way to break through a steely Mexican defence which has kept three consecutive clean sheets.
Quotes
“We must have our mind empty to recover well, first of all. We have to arrive to next match in a good shape. It’s not a coincidence that we are here.”
Giulia Galli, Italy
Players to Watch
Berenice Ibarra (Mexico)
Leading the team from the back, Mexico captain Ibarra is an anchor in defence. She is one of the main reasons her team has been able to pull off three 1-0 victories, including against Paraguay last time out, where Ibarra also scored the winning goal to take them through. She will now need all her experience playing at the highest level in Mexico to keep Italy in check.
Rachele Giudici (Italy)
Midfielder Giudici has been one of Italy’s standout players. Having been in the Team of the Tournament at the U-17 Women’s EURO earlier this year, she has continued her success at the world stage, scoring both against hosts Morocco and Nigeria and allowing her teammates to shine on the pitch.
