Group A
Costa Rica v Morocco
20:00 in Rabat
13:00 in San Jose
In serious trouble at their home World Cup after two defeats in its first two matches, Morocco nevertheless still has a chance at the Rabat Olympic Stadium. The Atlas Lionesses face a Costa Rican team that showed courage in a 1-1 against Brazil, and both teams need a win to remain in contention for a spot among the best third-placed teams. “We gave it our all against Italy, but we have to keep going against Costa Rica. We have to stay focused,” Morocco midfielder Celia Bouzman said.
Brazil v Italy
20:00 in Rabat
16:00 in Brasilia
21:00 in Rome
The clash at the top of Group A promises to be an exciting encounter between two of the most impressive in this tournament. With four points to their name, the Seleção have reached the round of 16 and will be aiming for nothing less than victory to secure the top spot in the group. Already qualified for the next round, Italy and their top scorer Giulia Galli only need a draw to be sure of retaining top spot. “Brazil are a very strong team technically; it will be a great match, but we have what it takes to compete with them,” Azzurre goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni said.
Group B
Netherlands v Korea DPR
20:00 in Rabat
21:00 in Amsterdam
04:00 in Pyongyang (on 25 October)
The European champions take on the reigning world champions in one of the most eagerly anticipated group stage encounters. While Korea DPR have already secured their progress to the round of 16, the Dutch cannot afford to slip up after a hard-fought 4-3 win over Cameroon and a last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Mexico, despite their opponents being a player down. “We have to stick together, stay positive, take the game against Korea to them, because we still have a good chance at the round of 16 if we win,” Netherlands Olivier Amelink told FIFA.
Mexico v Cameroon
20:00 in Rabat
13:00 in Mexico City
19:00 in Yaounde
With a little more luck, Cameroon could’ve been on two points before facing Mexico. However, they narrowly lost 4-3 against the Netherlands and then 2-1 against Korea DPR, conceding late both times. They go into this third match with nothing to lose and need a victory to progress to the round of 16. “We have to stay focused and believe in ourselves because we have faith,” Cameroon goalkeeper Jessica Mabou said. “It’s not over yet. If we manage to beat Mexico, we’ll have three points and we can hope to qualify.” Mexico meanwhile won late against the Netherlands thanks to a goal from Citlalli Reyes and will have wind in their sails. A draw could be enough for them to qualify for the next round.
Group C
Norway v USA
14:00 in Rabat
15:00 in Oslo
9:00 in Washington, D.C.
Norway and the USA have had opposite experiences here in Morocco. The US have scored eight goals and are already through to the next round, while Norway have their work cut out for them after being point- and goalless thus far. The situation is simple for the U-17 Women’s EURO finalists: They must win, preferably by a large margin, and hope for favourable results in the other matches if they are to have any chance of reaching the round of 16 in their first appearance at the U-17 Women’s World Cup. The US are keen to avoid any slip-ups before the knockout stages. “I just came here to go out there and have fun, but I came here to win, too, obviously,” Maddie Dimaria told FIFA. “So I think as a team and personally, we’re going for gold.”
Ecuador v China PR
14:00 in Rabat
8:00 in Quito
21:00 in Beijing
In this match between Ecuador and China PR, the winner will qualify for the next round regardless of the outcome, while a draw would suit both teams and eliminate Norway. The two sides have had similar starts to the competition so far, each beating the Scandinavians but losing to the Americans. Despite the joy of their victory over Norway, Ecuador defender Maite Zambrano remained calm and collected on Tuesday evening. “Honestly, we feel very calm after this win defender,” she told FIFA. “We’re already preparing for the next match, thinking about our next opponent, about doing things right and getting another victory.”
