“I was so full of emotion I didn’t even know how to celebrate,” said Jaden Umeh, as he reflected on scoring the Republic of Ireland’s first-ever FIFA U-17 World Cup™ goal in their 4-1 trouncing of Panama.
The dynamic attacker sparkled as Ireland marked their maiden appearance at the tournament in style. His predatory headed finish set them on their way to victory, with Kian McMahon-Brown, Michael Noonan and Max Kovalevskis also on target to thrill the vocal Irish fans in Doha.
“It was electric,” added Umeh. “The amount of Ireland fans here, it was unbelievable. It’s a long way from Ireland, so I want to say thank you to them. It felt amazing to score. Especially getting that first one… It’s a brilliant feeling. As a team, we’re together. Everyone has each other’s back. There is nothing to fear. Even if you lose the ball, you know your team-mate is coming to help you. We’re ready to fight for each other.”
Umeh, 17, plays his club football for Benfica, having signed for the Portuguese giants from Cork City last year. The Ireland squad also includes players who represent sides in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England.
“Being able to come from playing in different countries and be a real team, it’s amazing. The same players have been here since the Under-15s, so everyone’s got a good understanding of each other. We can be a challenge for anyone.”
On life at Benfica, Umeh said: “The fanbase is definitely crazy! The stadium is wonderful. I took the risk by going there at 16 because I want to progress and develop, especially in a big club. I think it was the best decision for me.”
Benfica’s youth system is renowned from producing exceptional players, with modern-day stars such as Joao Neves, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva among the elite talents who have learned their trade there. Umeh provided an insight into why the academy has had such success.
“The standard, the facilities there, it is amazing. Everything is prepared for you, and all you need to do is just play. Just perform. And ever since I moved over, everyone has treated me right. I had a great reception, and I thank everyone at Benfica for that. My Portuguese is coming along too!”
When asked to name the best thing about living in Lisbon, the young forward’s answer was instantaneous.
“It has to be weather, it’s been immaculate. It’s a big change from Ireland!”
