James and Diaz buoyed by World Cup buzz

The FIFA World Cup™ is a special occasion for football followers across the globe. It is an opportunity to come together, celebrate and showcase part of a nation’s culture. A chance to make your voice heard, be moved by your national anthem and reconnect with your roots. Thousands of fans fill the stadiums, turning the stands into a sea of vibrant colours.

This rings even truer for Colombia supporters; every edition of the global showpiece becomes a display of music, joy and passion – the perfect platform to express their love for their country. With the FIFA World Cup 2026™ set to take place in Canada, Mexico and the United States, the Colombian faithful are certain to come out in force and make their presence felt once again. This prospect offers an added incentive – as if they needed it – for the team to aim high at the tournament, as explained by two of their most prominent players, James Rodríguez and Luis “Lucho” Diaz.

After missing out on Qatar 2022™, Colombia are chomping at the bit ahead of their return to the world’s biggest stage. Nestor Lorenzo’s side finished third in the South American qualifiers – behind Argentina and Ecuador – with 28 points from 18 matches. The Argentinian tactician revitalised his charges, enabling them to rediscover their mojo and giving them an air of authority.

At the age of 34 and 29 respectively, James and Diaz epitomise the standard that has instilled a sense of optimism in La Tricolor’s camp. Colombia will contest Group K at this year’s World Cup, where they kick off against Uzbekistan before facing the winners from Path 1 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament (Congo DR, Jamaica or New Caledonia) and closing against Portugal. While their hopes will largely be pinned on the talents of the Minnesota United midfielder and the Bayern Munich winger, the energy generated by their fans in the stands in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Miami is sure to put an extra spring in the South Americans’ step.

“The whole of Colombia will be behind us. I know their support will never waver. I’m really grateful to everyone who cheers us on, and we’re raring to have a great World Cup,” Diaz told FIFA, pointing to the sizeable Cafeteros contingents who flocked to the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América in the United States and the team’s friendlies stateside in October and November last year. “It’s incredible. Every kid and footballer dreams of playing in their first World Cup. God willing, that dream will come true for me; I’m very grateful for this opportunity,” stressed the former Barranquilla, Junior, Porto and Liverpool schemer in relation to the competition itself.

James sounded a similar message, calling it “a positive thing” for Colombia that the tournament is being staged in North America “because whenever we play here, the stadiums are brimming with waves of yellow”. He went on to note that the event will be “huge” for all three host countries: “It’s going to be wonderful for everyone and a brilliant spectacle. Hopefully, the fans will make plenty of noise, enjoy themselves and really savour the World Cup experience, because it only comes around every four years.”

In Lorenzo’s system, James is stationed ahead of two defensive midfielders and tasked with pulling the strings. Díaz, for his part, lines up to the left of the playmaker, providing unpredictability and penetration with his penchant for running at and in behind opponents. Colombia’s number 10 waxed lyrical about his team-mate: “Lucho can score a goal or produce a moment of brilliance at any time. He’s our talisman right now, so we have to look after him for him to be at his best.”

“I think the decisive players need to feel as comfortable as possible on the pitch, and that’s what I try to do as well – to make sure he feels at ease and bring him into the game. You have to understand your team-mates’ strengths. I try to get the most out of Lucho. He’s one of a kind. I genuinely believe he can take us to even greater heights, so we have to support him,” added the much-travelled 2014 World Cup adidas Golden Boot winner.
