Lamouchi names much-changed Tunisia squad

Tunisia coach Sabri Lamouchi has named his 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, where the Eagles of Carthage will tackle Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden in Group F.

The squad features several new faces from the group that competed at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, including players who were not part of the roster for that tournament.

One of the most notable names is that of Rani Khedira, who will be making his first official competitive appearance for Tunisia. The Union Berlin midfielder, 32, agreed to represent the Eagles of Carthage last March and made a strong impression during friendly matches against Haiti and Canada, drawing upon his extensive experience in German football.

Since joining the national team, Lamouchi has signaled his intention to rejuvenate parts of the squad and place his trust in new player profiles. In addition to Khedira, the coach has called up several young players as well as others making a return to the national team, including Khalil Ayari, Raed Chikhaoui, Rayan Elloumi and Omar Rekik.

Midfielder Anis Ben Slimane, who appeared in two matches at Qatar 2022, also returned to the squad after spending much of 2025 sidelined due to injuries, setbacks that also kept him out of action with Norwich City.

These changes were also marked by the absence of several key figures who participated in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — most notably four of the squad’s principal leaders: Ferjani Sassi, Nabil Maaloul, Yassine Meriah, and Naim Sliti, the latter announcing his retirement from the national team last March.

Lamouchi will also rely on a host of other standout players, such as Hannibal Mejbri — who has made 25 appearances for Burnley in the Premier League so far this season — Copenhagen winger Elias Achouri, who has featured in seven Champions League matches this term, and Frankfurt midfielder Ellyes Skhiri, who has played 32 games across the Bundesliga and the Champions League this season; not to mention Ali Abdi, the full-back for French club Nice, and many other prominent players.

“These decisions were not easy; on the contrary, they were extremely difficult. But I am not looking to make simple decisions, nor am I looking to select players to please anyone other than the Tunisian people—neither now nor during the tournament,” Lamouchi said.

“From day one, I said that I came to give absolutely everything. I cannot promise success, but I can promise hard work and ambition,” noted the French coach. Delivering a message addressed to the Tunisian fans ahead of the tournament, he added: “I want to hear car horns honking, see Tunisian jerseys and flags everywhere, and, above all, I want our fans to feel proud of their national team.”
