Potter extends Sweden contract until 2030

Graham Potter has secured a contract extension as Sweden coach until 2030, just two weeks before the European play-offs for the FIFA World Cup 2026™. The Englishman was appointed initially on a short-term deal in October that would have been automatically extended had Sweden reached the global showpiece.

The Swedish FA have decided to place their faith in the former West Ham and Brighton coach ahead of the UEFA play-off against Ukraine in Valencia, Spain, on 26 March. Should Sweden win that game, they will face the victor of the Poland-Albania fixture in Stockholm five days later for a place in the World Cup.

“To be able to continue in this role means a lot to me,” Potter said in a statement. “I feel both a great pride and a great responsibility. It’s a big day for me and a fantastic opportunity to do something important going forward. Sweden is a football country with a proud history of teams that have made it to the finals of major championships and competed there, which we want to return to.”

Potter, who coached Swedish club Ostersund from 2011-18, was brought in to replace Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed following Sweden’s faltering start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

In his first two games, he could only secure a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland followed by a 1-1 draw with Slovenia. However, Sweden were still able to secure a place in the 16-team UEFA play-off competition as one of the top-ranked Nations League group winners.

The winner of Sweden’s play-off path will join Japan, Netherlands and Tunisia in Group F of the World Cup.
