As the only amateur side at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, Auckland City FC enter the tournament as genuine outsiders. At continental level though it’s been a very different story as the Navy Blues are the long-standing, free-scoring kings of Oceania football.
If they can manage to replicate even a fraction of the flood of goals they’ve rained down on home-patch opponents on the global stage then they may be well-placed to spring a surprise or two stateside.
Much of those hopes will likely rest with Myer Bevan, as the man tasked with leading the line at the pointy end of the 4-3-3 that head coach Paul Posa prefers.
Since his arrival at the Kiwitea Street outfit in September 2024, the 28-year-old has feasted on opponents both at local and regional level. At the ongoing New Zealand National League North, Bevan already has seven goal contributions in just ten outings while he was even more prolific as Auckland won a record 13th OFC Champions League title in April.
There, the locally-born marksman grabbed three goals and an assist in five outings, including a brace in a 2-0 win over Hekari United in the final.
For good measure, he was also on target for the Navy Blues in last year’s FIFA Intercontinental Cup™ as the side fell 6-2 against Al Ain in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup play-off match.
