Tuchel signs England extension to 2028

Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension to remain as England coach beyond FIFA World Cup 2026™.

The new deal will see him, and his staff, remain at the helm through to UEFA EURO 2028, which England are co-hosting alongside Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England,” Tuchel told England Football. “It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”

The German started his England reign on 1 January 2025, and begun with World Cup qualifying wins over Albania and Latvia that March. Another victory over Andorra followed in June, before a surprise 3-1 reverse in a friendly with Senegal ended his perfect start.

They quickly bounced back, though, with another success against Andorra and a friendly victory versus Wales. Another four preliminary wins saw the Three Lions ease to World Cup 26 qualification, becoming the first European team to win all of their qualifiers without conceding.

“I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the EUROs in 2028,” FA CEO Mark Bullingham added. “He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see.”

England have been placed in Group L at the World Cup, where they will face Croatia in Dallas, Ghana in Boston and Panama in New York New Jersey.
