USA icon Press calls time on career

It’s time to stop the Presses. USA icon Christen Press, who won back-to-back FIFA Women’s World Cup™ titles in 2015 and 2019, has announced she will retire at the end of the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.

The Angel City forward, 36, made 155 international appearances and scored 64 goals, which is the ninth-most in USA history. As well as two World Cup trophies, Press also secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics plus a number of continental titles.

Press’s most memorable goal arguably came at France 2019 when she opened the scoring for USA in their 2-1 victory over England in the semi-final with a near-post header.

Press has largely been a reserve for Angel City this season after last year coming back from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that required four surgeries.

“I’m retiring from professional soccer, and I’ve decided that this is my last season and my last few games,” Press told ABC’s Good Morning America. “I feel a mix of everything. There’s yes, there’s relief, there’s joy, there’s excitement, there’s fear, there’s so much grief. I have so much grief, a part of me, a piece of me, I’m losing her.”

Press follows her wife and former USA team-mate Tobin Heath in retirement. The couple are business partners together.
