Roberto Baggio
Italy v Bulgaria
USA 1994 | Semi-final
Giants Stadium, East Rutherford
It was one of the most salivating shootouts in World Cup history. It was ‘The Divine Ponytail’ against ‘El Pistolero’.
Roberto Baggio had headlined back-to-back 2-1 wins to spur Italy into the semis. Hristo Stoichkov had netted five times in his four three appearances to fire Bulgaria into unchartered territory.
The Juventus forward struck first – and with a beauty. Baggio allowed a Roberto Donadoni pass to roll past him, spun Zlatko Yankov, left Petar Hubchev sliding for a hot dog, and curled the ball around Trifon Ivanov and into the bottom corner of Borislav Mihaylov‘s net.
The shootout ultimately finished Baggio 2-1 Stoichkov. The game finished Italy 2-1 Bulgaria.
