23 days to go…
We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.
Igor Belanov
Soviet Union v Belgium
Mexico 1986 | Last 16
Estadio Leon, Leon
“I don’t like being reminded about it,” said Igor Belanov of being, alongside Ernst Wilimowski and Josef Hugi, one of only three men to hit a hat-trick but end up on the losing side in a World Cup game.
The goal that got the treble – and a seven-goal thriller – going is, however, something that brings a smile to Belanov’s face. “It was a great strike and I’m obviously proud of that,” remarked Belanov.
Belanov was running away from goal, in a seemingly impossible position to shoot, but exceptionally thundered the bouncing ball in off the post. It was past Jean-Marie Pfaff, one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, before he could even dive.
Soviet Union ultimately lost 4-3 in extra time, but their No19 went home having netted four goals in as many games, including a goal-of-the-tournament contender.
