Davor Jozic

Yugoslavia v Colombia
Italy 1990 | Group D
Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, Bologna

Davor Jozic went into Italia ’90 as a sweeper who, understandably, hadn’t scored in his six-year international career. He got off the mark with a fine header in Yugoslavia’s opener, but a 4-1 defeat to a Lothar Matthaus-inspired West Germany left them knowing they needed victory in their second game.

Therefore, when Colombia cleared a corner, with deadlock intact and only 17 minutes remaining, Jozic contradicted custom. As his fellow defenders jogged back, he stayed up. It paid off richly.

The 29-year-old crept between two Colombians, leapt into the Bolognese air, controlled a Safet Susic cross impeccably on his chest, and venomously volleyed the only goal past Rene Higuita.
