World Cup wonder goals: Eder’s Seville sizzler

20 days to go…

We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.

Eder

Brazil v Soviet Union
Spain 1982 | Group Stage
Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Seville

The build-up was breathtaking, the finish phenomenal. Eder’s memorable strike against the Soviet Union at Spain 1982 provided a snapshot of what makes Brazilian football beloved worldwide.

After Isidoro alighted on the ball on the right flank, he aimed a pass at Falcao which he brilliantly dummied for Eder. Then came the Seleção No11’s show-stopping moment. Still 25 yards from goal, Eder flicked the ball up with his left boot before sending a thunderous volley past helpless goalkeeper Rinat Dasayev.

Not only a goal of remarkable beauty, it was also the match-winner as Brazil kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory.
